Python Is Now Named in Twice as Many European Tech Jobs as Java
In August, JobSnout found Python in about 60% more active European tech jobs than Java. Ten weeks later the gap has widened. On 3 November 2026, Python was named in 4,285 active jobs (44.2%) and Java in 2,193 (22.6%), almost exactly twice as many.

The gap since August
| 29 Aug 2026 | 3 Nov 2026 | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active jobs naming Python | 3,023 | 4,285 | +42% |
| Active jobs naming Java | 1,890 | 2,193 | +16% |
| Naming both | 593 | 820 | +38% |
| Python ÷ Java | 1.60× | 1.95× |
Both grew partly because JobSnout covers more employers than it did in August. The growth is therefore not a pure market trend. But Python grew much faster than Java in the same collection, so the widening gap is real within JobSnout's data.
The new statistical check on Skill Radar confirms that the order is not noise. Python is clearly ahead of every other term, and Java is clearly ahead of TypeScript (19.3%), the next language down.
Two different markets
The headline compares two languages that are mostly used for different jobs. JobSnout classified the titles of the postings that name each one:
| Title type | Python jobs | Java jobs |
|---|---|---|
| Data, ML, AI, analytics or research | 1,306 (30%) | 239 (11%) |
| Backend, platform, API, full-stack or software engineer | 1,347 (31%) | 1,035 (47%) |
Almost a third of Python postings are data and AI roles. Java postings are concentrated in backend and platform engineering. For the backend roles, the two are much closer than the headline: 1,347 Python postings against 1,035 Java postings.
The wider JVM ecosystem adds to Java's side. Counting any posting that names Java, Kotlin, the JVM, Spring, Jakarta EE, Hibernate or JPA gives 2,623 active jobs (27%). Kotlin alone is named in 536 and Spring in 645.
Where each one is strongest
| Country | Python | Java | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 1,045 | 334 | 3.1× |
| Germany | 538 | 235 | 2.3× |
| Spain | 485 | 242 | 2.0× |
| France | 403 | 268 | 1.5× |
| Poland | 374 | 232 | 1.6× |
| Netherlands | 225 | 129 | 1.7× |
| Portugal | 201 | 113 | 1.8× |
| Ireland | 190 | 102 | 1.9× |
The UK is where Python's lead is largest. France and Poland are where Java holds up best, both markets with large enterprise and consulting sectors.
What the postings ask for besides the language
JobSnout now tracks ways of working alongside technologies. The two markets differ in recognisable ways:
| Practice | Java postings | Python postings |
|---|---|---|
| Mentoring | 28.1% | 25.9% |
| Code review | 18.0% | 14.3% |
| Automated testing | 17.2% | 12.4% |
| Agile / Scrum | 17.2% | 14.3% |
| System design / architecture | 14.8% | 12.6% |
| CI/CD | 28.0% | 33.4% |
| Observability | 26.6% | 29.5% |
| On-call | 8.4% | 11.2% |
Java postings lean towards engineering process: testing, reviews, Agile and mentoring. Python postings lean towards operations: CI/CD, observability and on-call. That fits a Java market weighted towards established backend teams, and a Python market that includes more infrastructure and ML-platform work.
The salary gap is mostly about Java-only postings
Across every salary-transparent posting JobSnout has recorded, active and closed:
| Group | Salaried postings | Median advertised salary |
|---|---|---|
| Python (any) | 2,028 | €86,500 |
| Java (any) | 2,165 | €69,995 |
| Both Python and Java | 438 | €86,825 |
| Python without Java | 1,590 | €86,500 |
| Java without Python | 1,727 | €67,079 |
Postings that ask for both languages pay like Python postings. The low median belongs to Java-only postings, which include a large enterprise, consultancy and agency segment, and more of the French and Polish market, where advertised salaries are lower overall.
Among currently active postings only, the gap is narrower: €89,244 for Python (785 salaried postings) against €79,920 for Java (423).
What it means for Java developers
- Java's market is smaller than Python's but more focused. Nearly half of Java postings are backend or platform roles, the job a Java developer is actually looking for. Python's larger number includes a lot of data and AI work.
- Pairing languages pays. Java postings that also ask for Python had the same median as Python postings. The same is true of the cloud and distributed-systems skills that appear alongside them.
- The process skills are your differentiator. Testing, code review and mentoring appear more often in Java postings. If you have them, name them.
Methodology and limitations
- Data: active jobs on each date, duplicates removed, recruiters included. JobSnout's coverage grew since August, so changes mix market movement and collection growth.
- Detection: languages and practices matched in titles and descriptions; title types are approximate keyword groups.
- Salaries: employer-advertised, all recorded postings (active and closed), midpoint of the range, converted to EUR at ECB rates.
- Caveat: these are associations, not causal premiums.
