Python vs Java Jobs in Europe: Demand, Cities and Salaries
Python appears in substantially more European programming vacancies than Java in JobSnout's current snapshot—but the headline count is only the beginning of the comparison.
As of 29 August 2026, 3,023 active jobs mentioned Python and 1,890 mentioned Java. The two ecosystems are not separate: 593 postings asked for both.

Python therefore appeared in about 60% more active postings than Java. That does not mean there were 60% more interchangeable Python developer roles. Python spans backend engineering, data engineering, machine learning, automation, research and infrastructure. Java is more concentrated around backend applications, platforms and enterprise systems.
Python had a broader remote and hybrid footprint

Python's remote and hybrid counts were almost equal. Java leaned more heavily toward hybrid work among roles whose arrangement was known.
The large “unclear” Java group deserves caution. It means the source did not state a workplace model confidently enough for JobSnout to label it—not that those 935 roles were necessarily office based.
For candidates, the practical difference is breadth. Python opened more paths across workplace models, while Java still represented a large and distinct market of nearly 1,900 active vacancies.
The salary comparison changes when the skills overlap
Among active postings with visible pay, the median EUR-equivalent salary was:

The combined-skill group had the highest median, but it was also the smallest sample. These figures do not establish that adding Python to a Java CV causes a €30,000 pay increase. Location, seniority, industry and role type differ across the groups.
They do suggest a useful question for deeper analysis: are roles spanning both ecosystems more likely to involve platforms, data infrastructure or senior integration work? That is testable as JobSnout accumulates more history.
Salary visibility also differed. About 24.1% of Java-only vacancies displayed pay, compared with 16.0% of Python-only vacancies and 15.0% of postings that mentioned both.
London led both markets
London was the largest named city for each skill, but Python's footprint was much bigger.

Python was especially strong in London, Munich and Cambridge—markets with significant finance, research, data and AI activity. Java remained broadly distributed across major European business centres.
City counts include jobs whose location explicitly names that city. Remote jobs with no town stated are not assigned to a city, so this table should not be used as a complete measure of where residents can work.
The surrounding stack matters more than the language alone
A useful job search should go beyond “Python or Java.” Candidates should ask which adjacent capabilities employers repeatedly request.
For Python, likely branches include data and AI tooling, web APIs, cloud infrastructure and automation. For Java, the important distinctions include Spring, distributed systems, Kafka, cloud platforms and Kubernetes.
That makes the language decision less binary than it first appears. A Java engineer moving toward distributed systems may compete in a different market from a Java developer maintaining business applications. A Python platform engineer and a Python data scientist share a language but not necessarily a career track.
What this means for candidates
Python currently offers the larger pool of European vacancies and more named remote and hybrid opportunities. Java still supports a substantial market, particularly for backend and platform work, and Java-only postings were more likely to show pay in this snapshot.
Candidates choosing what to learn next should therefore avoid treating the top-line count as a verdict. A better sequence is:
- choose the type of systems you want to build;
- inspect the stack combinations employers request for that work;
- compare demand in the countries and towns where you can work;
- filter for visible salaries before comparing compensation;
- treat small salary samples as directional, not definitive.
Methodology and limitations
This analysis covers active, deduplicated JobSnout postings on 29 August 2026. A job belongs to a skill group when its title or description triggers JobSnout's deterministic technology classifier. One job may mention several skills and may count in both the Python and Java totals.
Salary medians use active jobs with employer-provided compensation, take the midpoint of ranges and convert supported non-EUR currencies using the ECB reference rates dated 28 August 2026. The observation window began on 24 August, so this is a snapshot rather than evidence of a trend.
