Beyond the Tech Stack: The Ways of Working European Tech Job Ads Ask For

Most advice about tech CVs is about tools: which languages, clouds and frameworks to list. Job adverts say something else. When JobSnout started counting ways of working (scalability, mentoring, code review, on-call and others) next to technologies, one of them came second in the whole ranking.

On 3 November 2026, scalability was named in 35.2% of the 9,702 active jobs JobSnout tracks. Only Python, at 44.2%, appeared in more postings. Scalability was ahead of all 44 other technologies JobSnout tracks, including AWS and Kubernetes.

Four of the seven most-named terms are practices, not technologies

Each figure is the share of active jobs that name the term at least once. The margin is the 95% sampling error. "Clearly ahead" means the term is named significantly more often than the next one, tested on the postings that name only one of the two.

Term Kind Share of active jobs Margin Compared with the next row
Python Language 44.2% ±1.0 clearly ahead
Scalability Practice 35.2% ±1.0 clearly ahead
AWS Cloud 28.6% ±0.9 within noise
CI/CD Practice 27.8% ±0.9 clearly ahead
Observability Practice 25.5% ±0.9 within noise
Kubernetes Infrastructure 24.5% ±0.9 within noise
Mentoring Practice 24.1% ±0.9 clearly ahead
Java Language 22.6% ±0.8 clearly ahead

Scalability, CI/CD, observability and mentoring are four of the seven most-named terms. The only technologies among them are Python, AWS and Kubernetes. Mentoring alone is named in 2,335 active jobs, more than TypeScript (1,872), PostgreSQL (1,218) or Kafka (867).

The "within noise" labels matter. AWS and CI/CD are effectively tied. So are observability and Kubernetes. With a different week of postings, their order could flip. A ranking that hides this suggests more precision than the data has.

All ten practices

Practice Active jobs Share Compared with the next row
Scalability 3,416 35.2% clearly ahead
CI/CD 2,701 27.8% clearly ahead
Observability 2,472 25.5% clearly ahead
Mentoring 2,335 24.1% clearly ahead
Cross-functional work 1,799 18.5% clearly ahead
Code review 1,570 16.2% clearly ahead
Agile / Scrum 1,312 13.5% within noise
System design / architecture 1,264 13.0% within noise
Automated testing 1,196 12.3% clearly ahead
On-call 861 8.9% —

None of these is close to universal. Even scalability is absent from almost two thirds of postings. But together they describe what employers expect beyond a tool list: building systems that grow, shipping them continuously, seeing what they do in production, and helping other engineers do the same.

Postings that name senior practices advertise more

Across all 7,849 salaried postings JobSnout has recorded, active and closed, the median advertised salary was €78,745. Postings naming certain practices sat well above it.

Practice Salaried postings Median advertised salary Postings without it
On-call 425 €103,428 €77,636
Mentoring 771 €99,160 €76,107
System design / architecture 448 €95,952 €77,500
Observability 863 €94,800 €76,049
Scalability 1,537 €90,000 €75,828
Code review 578 €86,575 €78,000
Cross-functional work 753 €81,800 €78,600
CI/CD 1,215 €79,447 €78,745
Agile / Scrum 851 €72,912 €79,983
Automated testing 513 €69,375 €80,000

The pattern is easy to read and easy to over-read. The practices at the top describe senior work. The ones at the bottom describe process that is asked of everyone.

Most of the mentoring gap is seniority

Mentoring rises sharply with level. It is named in 27% of active Senior postings, 51% of Staff postings and 58% of Principal postings.

Level Active jobs Mentoring System design On-call
Junior 274 26% 3% 4%
Senior 3,358 27% 14% 12%
Staff 665 51% 23% 12%
Principal 243 58% 28% 6%
Architect 505 32% 18% 2%
Level not stated 4,624 15% 11% 7%

(Junior postings that mention mentoring usually offer it rather than ask for it. JobSnout counts both.)

Comparing like with like changes the picture. Within Senior postings, the mentoring gap shrinks from €23,000 overall to about €4,000.

Within Senior postings With the practice Without it Difference
On-call €94,600 (n=177) €81,661 +€12,939
Cross-functional work €91,287 (n=217) €81,661 +€9,626
System design / architecture €90,000 (n=177) €81,661 +€8,339
Scalability €87,500 (n=567) €81,661 +€5,839
Mentoring €85,630 (n=338) €81,661 +€3,969
CI/CD €81,661 (n=408) €81,869 −€208
Automated testing €77,712 (n=192) €82,500 −€4,788

Most of the mentoring premium is about who is asked to mentor. The postings that ask for it are more senior. Among Senior roles, on-call, cross-functional work and system design still sit noticeably higher. Automated testing still sits lower.

At Staff level, some of these differences reverse. Staff postings that mention on-call had a median of €121,000 (n=59), against €137,483 for Staff postings that don't. On-call is not what sets Staff pay. The samples at this level are also small, so treat Staff differences as indicative.
